 Dance Extravaganza

Art and DramaI''m sure everyone who was able to make it to our "Dance Extravaganza" on the last day of term would agree that the kids did a great job performing the dance items they''ve been practicing with instructors from Raw Dance.

The Zip and Move Dance program provides a non-competitive and fun environment with the aim of increasing self confidence, self expression, motivation and increased physical activity for each participant. Raw Dance Company is currently working in partnerships with Education Queensland, The Australian Sports Commission and over 100 councils throughout Australia delivering education programs for students of all ages Raw Dance Company is all about creating successful partnerships for healthier minds and bodies for today''''s youth.

 Scholastic Classrooms Care

Front DeskSenior M took on the Scholastic Classrooms Care project, which is a special reading program that empowers students to read and make a difference to disadvantaged Australian children. The challenge involved our class reading 100 books, so that Scholastic Book Clubs would donate 100 books to kids in need.

Senior M successfully completed the challenge with enthusiasm and commitment. The students will receive certificates for their participation in the project, however, all agree that the best reward was being able to make a difference to kids who are less fortunate than themselves and do not have access to the wonderful resources that they do.

 Year 7's Cats Musical

Art and DramaCatsI really liked Cats because we all got to experience the show. Cats was a good musical and once you’ve seen Cats you can understand why it is one of the best musicals in the world. I learnt that when you’re in a theatre it is like a big room that echoes, so when you go in the theatre you have to be quiet and if you need to talk to a teacher you need to whisper. Otherwise everyone can hear you. The performers look at everyone in the theatre not just the people on the first level. When they sang or just talked they used their voices so everyone in the theatre could hear when they were sad, happy or angry.

My favourite Cats were Skimble Shanks, Magical Mr Mistoffolees, Old Deuteronomy and Rum Tum Tugger. I like Skimble Shanks because he was a nice looking cat. Magical Mr Mistoffolees was one of my favourites because he couldn’t talk but you still could understand what he was saying and what he was feeling. I liked Old Deuteronomy because he had a good voice. I liked Rum Tum Tugger because he was the one that kept the musical happy plus he kept mystery to it.

I liked how the costumes looked so real and the actors looked like real cats. I liked how the writer of Cats made the set look like a real dump and how the lights changed colours and how they used the colours through the musical.

 Preps at Nudgee Beach

Events at MWSSOn Tuesday the 4th of August Prep C and Prep H went on an exciting excursion to Nudgee Beach Environmental Centre. We walked on the mangrove boardwalk and looked at tiny crabs, toadfish, different mangrove trees and mud crab holes. At the Environmental Centre we learnt facts about crabs. The parents helped us with beach activities. We pumped yabbies, found tiny animals in the sand and we made sandcastles.

On the beach we touched mangrove nodes, green worms, mangrove seeds, dogwhelks, yabbies, baby crabs and toadfish. Back at the centre we played with sea puppets, made clay sea creatures, listened to the sea inside shells and crawled like crabs through a tunnel.

We had a fantastic day on our trip.

 School Disciplinary Absence Information

PrincipalUploaded to the website is a document showing the total number of Student Disciplinary Absences (suspensions and exclusions) for the years 2006 to 2009. This document can be accessed from the Documents menu on the left hand side of this web page.

Many strategies are used by our school to provide appropriate consequences for unacceptable student behaviour. The use of School Disciplinary Absences - suspensions, exclusions and cancellations of enrolment - are consequences used after consideration has been given to all other responses.

The data are provided in terms of aggregate counts of incidents recorded by the school. The data do not represent the outcomes of any related appeal decisions.

 Senior Netballers

NetballCongratulations to all of our interschool netball girls who did a wonderful job in representing Manly West this season. A special mention goes to the Senior 1 team, who stayed at the top of the ladder throughout the season and made the finals.

In the final week of netball, the Senior 1 team played two exciting games. The first game was a semifinal and they were up against Wynnum West. The whole game was head-to-head but at the end Manly West broke through and won 11-7.

It has been a while since one of Manly West’s netball teams have made it through to the finals… so when we discovered we had made it, we were thrilled. Manly West’s competitors were Tingalpa and they were a very well-trained team. The game was tough and competitive and resulted in both teams needing to play overtime to decided on a winner. In the end, Tingalpa were victorious with the overtime score being 9-3. Even though we didn’t win we still were proud to reach the finals. Congratulations to the Tingalpa Year 7 team!
By Katherine and Imogen

Congratulations to grade 7 student, Mereana, who has been selected to play in the Lytton District netball team, as well as the Metropolitan East netball team. Mereana has shown commitment and dedication to these teams by attending after school training sessions as well as carnival days. We wish her all the luck for her future netball success.

Rugby League - A Proud Coach

Rugby

footballRugby League: A proud coach watched as the game see-sawed back and forth throughout the night, with both teams going to the half time break at 4-4. Wondall scored early in the second half, only to see Manly West strike back to make the score 8-8.

Despite some solid defence, Wondall scored twice more, leaving the final score at 18 points to 12. All the boys are to be congratulated for their efforts on the night, particularly Dylan and Jalen who shared the Man of the Match Award for their creative attack and solid defence.

The boys would like to give a special thanks to all the supporters: teachers, parents and children who turned up on the night to barrack for them.
